Balzac Collection

Balzac Collection

The Balzac armchair by Matthew Hilton was launched by SCP in 1991. It was SCP’s very first upholstery design, lovingly made by hand at a specialist factory in Norfolk. Initially the design was met with little fanfare, but within a few years its curvaceous looks, modernist sensibility and undoubted comfort had caught the design world’s imagination. It went on to become SCP’s signature piece and bestseller.

The Balzac also started SCP on the journey to making fully sustainable upholstery. Around a decade after the Balzac first appeared, SCP acquired and fully integrated the factory in Norfolk. Since then, the factory has developed into one of the leading proponents of sustainable upholstery making in the British design industry.
