Michael Marriott
Michael Marriott has been working as a designer since his graduation from London’s Royal College of Art in 1993. He immediately set up his own studio specialising in furniture design and had early success organising the production of his own designs as well as designing for manufacturers such as SCP and Inflate. This success was underscored when in 1999 he was awarded the first ever Jerwood Furniture Prize. As well as furniture design Michael has also worked on exhibition design curating shows at the Geffrye Museum and Camden Arts Centre. He is currently a Senior tutor on the Design Products MA at the RCA and has recently designed for Established and Sons and Twentytwentyone.Renowned for his DIY aesthetic, Marriott’s work often employs everyday objects from the hardware shop: peg boards, wing nuts and plastic buckets incorporated for good reason as well as effect. Marriott’s furniture often subverts the norm by using inexpensive or reclaimed objects along with more traditional furniture making Colors. His relationship with SCP began in the 1990’s when he designed pieces such as the Croquet shelving and Missed daybed in ‘97 and ‘98 respectively. Over ten years later Michael is making his return to SCP with the Joe side table.
