End of Line Cardboard Ceramics

Ray G Brown | Cass

Cardboard Ceramics are corrugated ceramic cups, formed from single-use cardboard moulds. The moulds are filled with stoneware clay, and then burned away in the kiln - creating dense, overlapping textures on the ceramics inside. The cups bear the crumpled gesture of the cardboard, as if they are made of petrified paper. Cardboard Ceramics are a reaction to our profligate culture of disposable cardboard products. The making process turns generic wasteful cardboard into distinctive ceramic tableware. They are tactile, handmade, and rich with individual character - the antithesis of the mundane, expendable paper from which they are made. Cardboard Ceramics are handmade by Ray G Brown in his studio. Each cup is formed from its own individual mould - therefore, no two are exactly the same.

Students of The Cass (London Met University) were briefed by SCP to create small,
easily-shipped domestic products. With the help of the university, and their tutor
Peter Marigold, the products were brought to market through a successful
crowdfunding project entitled Cass Starters. An exhibit of the Cass Starters project
will be on display at SCP during the London Design Festival 2017.
In early 2016, SCP assigned Cass students a brief: to design products which are simple, attractive, and small enough to be shipped through regular post. After graduating, four students - Tim Summers, Ray G Brown, Nicholas Marschner, and Isabel Farchy developed their designs into fully realised products.
