Fibreglass DAR armchair

Charles & Ray Eames | Vitra

Classic yet timeless, the Eames Fibreglass armchairs bring a narrative of mid-century innovation into modern homes. The DAR armchair features an 'Eiffel Tower' base; a light, elegant and strong construction made of steel wire.

Product Information
Charles & Ray Eames first coined the idea for a moulded shell chair with interchangeable bases in 1948, in response to the 'International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design'.

Although their first prototype was in costly metal, they quickly identified glass-fibre reinforced polyester resin as an ideal, cheaper, alternative. Until then, fibreglass had been primarily used within military applications, but the designers recognised its suitability for the furniture industry. With this material, they could create moulded, strong and lightweight seat shells for mass-production, and the Fiberglass Chair was born.

The collection of armchairs and side chairs share the original colour palette of warm organic tones developed by the Eameses’, plus a series of sturdy bases that give each chair its own distinct character.

Seat shell: dyed-through, glass-fibre reinforced polyester (fibreglass). Just like the earliest models, today‘s fibreglass shells are also slightly transparent in some colours. Wire base with cross struts.

Fitted with felt basic dark glides for hard floor. Other glides are available upon request.
